隆起 UPLIFT

This marks Yakushima Photography Festival (YPF)’s first exhibition in Tokyo and brings together works by Godai Sugimizu and Juliette Agnel, created during their 2026 residencies on Yakushima.

Through photography and Super 8mm film, the two artists engage with Yakushima’s primeval forests. Connecting their works is the humidity that permeates the forest, explored through different perspectives on the body, memory, and time.

The exhibition title, “UPLIFT,” refers to the geological formation of Yakushima, an island shaped by the uplift of the seabed. At the same time, it reflects what emerges when the works of two artists—from different backgrounds in Japan and France, and working in different media, photography and film—come together in a single space, with Yakushima as their shared point of departure.

As their distinct perspectives and forms of expression interact, new sensations, temporalities, and spatial relationships emerge. The exhibition considers this space, created through the interaction of these two forces, as a form of “uplift.”
