MIDORI.so Gallery is proud to present Root That Permeate, a solo exhibition by SHOKEI.

Captivated by the romance of floral patterns since childhood, SHOKEI’s practice began with wearing garments sewn by her mother and grandmother, drawing flowers, and arranging blooms. Over time, this early intimacy evolved into a sustained exploration of floral imagery through print, layering, and transparency.

Raised in a home filled with diverse floral motifs including Japanese, Western, traditional Cantonese, kitsch, and classic influences, SHOKEI grew up within a layered visual environment that quietly shaped her sense of identity. As a child, these patterns sometimes felt unfamiliar and difficult to place. Gradually, however, they became deeply personal. It was not a single origin but a coexistence of influences that formed her sense of self.

Working from a personal archive accumulated over the years, SHOKEI reconfigures floral imagery through processes of printing, layering, and transparency to trace the sedimented origins of her aesthetic sensibility. The works do not offer a fixed narrative, but instead create an atmosphere and an afterimage that lingers.

Through repetition and reconstruction, she considers identity not as a rigid cultural category such as nationality or ethnicity, but as something formed through lived environments, memory, and perception.

Root That Permeate invites viewers to reflect on how identity and aesthetic sensibility quietly take shape and how they continue to permeate what we see.
