Ray Horacek’s 5th solo art exhibition “TEGUMENT”

*Japanese as follows,

CONCEPT:
our skin is to some degree our point of disclosure to the world, imparting our bodies’ histories, the condition of our health and vigor, how old we are, where we might be from. but when compared with other species, our austere bodies are fairly useless for actual communication. how and what might our skin communicate if we had some of the more sophisticated tools found in animals & plants?

for TEGUMENT, custom digital algorithms suggestive of algorithms found in nature’s patterns, textures, camouflage, and organic structures are projected onto the human form, pixelated, manipulated live, and the result is captured in large-format photographs and video with minimal retouching.

アーティスト レイ ホラチェエクの5度目の個展、「TEGUMENT」を開催します。

コンセプト
人間の皮膚を見れば、世界の真相が見え、人体の歴史、その人の健康状態や活力、年齢、出身地がある程度までは分かる。しかし、ほかの生物と比べて、異なる進化を遂げた人体は実際のコミュニケーションという点ではまったく機能しない。もし人間の皮膚に、動物や植物がもつようなもっと精巧な機能があるとしたら、皮膚は何をどのように伝えるのだろうか。

TEGUMENTでは、自然界の法則、人体の組織、動物のカモフラージュ模様、そして有機体構造などのアルゴリズムを連想させるデジタルアルゴリズムが、人体、操作された生命体にピクセル化され、投影される。そして、写真やビデオでその結果をみてみようという試みである。

Ray Horacek works from his tokyo studio or from his suitcase in any number of countries and cities depending on the week. having studied industrial design, his work is an intersection of the industrial arts, human populations, and physical & mathematical elements from nature, and every piece stands on the 3 pillars of logic, emotion, and craft. organic vs. mechanic, control vs. chaos, and gesticulation vs. delineation are some of the recurring contrasts he employs in his concept and artwork generation.

東京を中心とし、その他様々な国や地域で創作活動を行う、アメリカ人アーティスト。
インダストリアルデザインを学んだ事も影響し、彼の作品は、インダストリアルアート、人口、物理的•数学的要素から発想を得るのと同時に全てにおいて、論理、感情、技術という3点の軸から成り立っている。また、有機的/機械的、コントロール/混沌、身振り/叙述など、繰り返し起こる対比が表現する上での一つのポイントになっている。
